Pregnancy Weight

Is it true you can actually eat for two when you become pregnant…. Sorry to burst your bubble, you are eating for two but your calorie intake should not be the same as two adults.

According to "What to Expect" this is what your calorie intake should be during each trimester:
  • First Trimester - you won't need to take in additional calories so stick to a 2,000 calorie diet.
  • Second Trimester - up your intake by 300 to 350 calories per day.
  • Third Trimester - up your intake by an extra 500 calories per day.
*If you are carrying multiples you will need to increase your intake by 300 calories per day per baby.

IMPORTANT to know - even though you are increasing your calorie intake, please make sure you are choosing healthy foods to eat rather than junk foods that are empty calories. Eating the right type and quantity of foods and drinks will help your baby get all the nutrients he/she needs to be healthy. (Click here to find foods to eat vs not to eat) It is also important to note your weight before you are pregnant as this will impact how much you should be taking in. Please consult your doctor to know where you need to be.

Overall, you may gain anywhere from 28-30 pounds by the end of your pregnancy. This is composed of :
